Before you can send SMS marketing messages, you must collect proper consent from your customers. This is required by TCPA law.
How Shopify handles SMS consent
Shopify has a built-in SMS marketing consent option in your checkout settings. When enabled, customers see a checkbox at checkout where they can opt in to receive SMS marketing from your store.
To enable it:
- Go to your Shopify Admin > Settings > Checkout
- Under the Marketing consent section, enable SMS marketing
- The consent checkbox will appear at checkout for customers who enter a phone number
Firepush automatically syncs with Shopify's SMS consent data — when a customer opts in at checkout, their consent status is available to Firepush.
Consent language requirements
The consent text shown to customers must include:
- Your store name clearly identified
- That they agree to receive promotional SMS messages
- Message frequency disclosure (e.g. "Message frequency varies")
- Message and data rates may apply
- Opt-out instructions — reply STOP to unsubscribe
- Links to your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service
Key rules
- The checkbox must be unchecked by default — customers must actively opt in
- Consent must be freely given and not a condition of purchase
- Having a phone number alone is not consent — the customer must explicitly agree to receive marketing messages
Next steps
Once you've set up consent collection, learn how to enable SMS and submit your setup for review.
