TCPA & SMS compliance

Double opt-in for Canada short codes

When sending SMS messages to Canadian customers, a double opt-in process may be required depending on the number type used. This is mandated by Canadian wireless carrier regulations and Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

What is double opt-in?

Double opt-in means that after a customer initially subscribes to receive SMS marketing, they must confirm their subscription by replying to a confirmation message (e.g. replying YES). Only after this confirmation will they receive marketing messages.

When is it required?

  • Short code messaging in Canada — Canadian carriers require double opt-in for marketing messages sent via short codes
  • CASL compliance — Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation requires express consent before sending commercial electronic messages

How Firepush handles it

Firepush processes double opt-in confirmations automatically. When a customer replies with a confirmation keyword (YES, Y, GO, OK, SURE, YEP, YEAH), their subscription is confirmed and they will start receiving your messages.

Good to know

  • Customers can unsubscribe at any time by replying STOP
  • Customers can reply HELP to receive support information
  • For Canadian-to-Canadian messaging, 10DLC registration is not required
